Tooth-Colored Fillings and Bonding

Dental decay is one of the most common oral conditions impacting children and adults' smiles. At Oak Tree Dentistry, we provide tooth-colored fillings that blend in with your smile.

Composite Resin Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings have been around for decades but have gained in popularity in the last twenty-five years because their durability closely matches that of amalgam (silver) fillings. Made of tiny ceramic or glass particles and BPA-free fillers, dental composites instantly harden when exposed to a special curing light.

Dental Decay and Fillings

Dental decay occurs when bacteria soften the hard enamel exterior of teeth, opening up the softer dentin inside to bacteria and decay. Decay does not usually cause pain until it comes close to the nerve, deep inside the tooth. We recommend regular dental x-rays to identify signs of decay before a painful infection develops.

Treating decay early typically means less invasive and complex treatment.

Before beginning treatment, Dr. Gill will ensure your tooth is numb so your procedure is completely comfortable. Small fillings may not even require the tooth to be numb because they only impact the tooth's surface.

We will discuss your options and even offer nitrous oxide, which is usually safe for both adults and children.

After gently removing the decay, Dr. Gill will prepare the tooth with a bonding agent to secure the filling. He will then apply the composite in layers and harden it with a curing light. Once he fills the tooth, Dr. Gill will polish and shape it so it perfectly matches your tooth structure.

Prevent Tooth Decay

Adhering to a few healthy habits and best practices can significantly lower your cavity risks. Below are three practical tips.

Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth should take two minutes or longer. Be sure to hit all surfaces and clean your teeth at least twice daily for a healthier smile.

Floss Your Teeth

Flossing is an integral part of regular oral hygiene. Be sure to floss carefully between all teeth, using fresh sections of floss as you move along.

See the Dentist

Never skip preventive checkups and teeth cleanings. These appointments promote ongoing dental health and help prevent many oral conditions.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Composite resin fillings have many benefits over amalgam fillings.

  • Natural appearance
  • No mercury
  • More conservative
  • No metal components

Composite fillings require the removal of less healthy tooth structure since they bond directly to teeth. This leaves more healthy teeth intact.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

In addition to treating decay, composite provides an affordable way to make small changes to teeth.

  • Filling small chips
  • Closing narrow gaps
  • Reshaping teeth
  • Covering discoloration

Cosmetic bonding adds to the existing tooth structure and does not require a dental lab, making it an affordable and conservative way to have cosmetic dentistry that improves your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth-colored fillings are made of a composite material that matches your teeth. Your dentist can use composite to fill cavities for an aesthetically pleasing restoration.

Dentists used silver amalgam to treat cavities in the past, but today, more patients prefer the tooth-colored option.

Benefits of tooth-colored fillings in Lodi and Elk Grove include:

  • No shrinking or expanding due to hot or cold beverages.
  • We remove less tooth structure to fill the cavity.
  • The results are virtually seamless.

How Tooth-Colored Fillings Work

Your Lodi or Elk Grove dentist clears decay from the tooth and uses composite in layers, setting it as we go. After we fill the cavity, we polish the tooth for a brilliant finish.

We can also use composite resin to bond teeth. Bonding is an inexpensive way to hide tooth flaws, including chips, cracks, discoloration, and small spaces between teeth.

Dental bonding can be incorporated into a smile makeover or used alone. It typically takes only one office visit to bond teeth.

We’re pleased to offer three levels of dental sedation in Lodi and Elk Grove to meet your needs.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

Our team monitors you closely during dental sedation, and we take a health history to ensure your candidacy.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe gas administered through a nasal cannula during your procedure. You feel detached and melancholy with nitrous, but you’re still aware. This sedation method means you’ll feel less anxious during your procedure, but there are no lingering effects. You can drive yourself home or back to work.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a pill given before treatment. With this sedation method, you’ll feel completely relaxed and may not recall the finer details of your treatment. You’ll need a friend or loved one to drive you. We also recommend resting for the day and not making any life-altering decisions.

IV Sedation

As with oral sedation, you should have transportation and rest for the remainder of the day following your procedure. IV sedation is delivered directly into the bloodstream. You’ll be minimally conscious but mostly unaware of what’s happening. It’s doubtful you’ll remember your procedure.

Tooth-Colored Fillings and Bonding: What You Should Know about Cosmetic Restorations

In the past, dentists relied exclusively on amalgam to treat tooth decay. Amalgam works just fine, but it is silver and can detract from your smile, especially the front teeth.

Today, we use tooth-colored fillings to treat cavities. It’s a way to care for the tooth without covering it in silver.

Tooth-colored fillings are made of a composite resin material and can be color-matched to blend with your unrestored teeth. Additionally, tooth-colored fillings, unlike amalgam, do not contain mercury. Studies have concluded that the mercury in amalgam fillings is safe, but some ...
