Periodontal (Gum) Treatments

Healthy teeth and gums mean better overall health.

In addition to ensuring that you can eat a nutritious diet full of fruits, vegetables, and other foods your body requires for optimum function, research has linked gum disease with many serious systemic conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Premature and low birth weight babies
  • Cancer

At Oak Tree Dentistry, we love seeing active patients get the most out of life and enjoy healthy bodies and smiles. We provide a periodontal evaluation for every patient to identify gum disease and determine the best course of treatment.

Six Common Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is preventable, but some patients have higher risk factors for developing it. Below, your Lodi and Elk Grove dentist shares a few of the most common culprits.

Poor Oral Hygeine

Brushing and flossing at least twice daily are essential to lowering your risk of periodontal disease. Remember to spend time on your smile, cleaning all tooth surfaces.

Lack of Dental Care

Visit the dentist every six months for dental checkups and professional teeth cleanings. These visits significantly lower the odds of developing this gum condition.

Smoking and Tobacco

Tobacco use is a known risk factor for gum disease and other oral and physical health conditions, including cancer and heart disease. Consider quitting it in all forms.

Changes in Hormones

Hormonal changes, as seen in pregnancy, for example, can increase your odds of developing gingivitis and gum disease. Be sure to visit the dentist if you're expecting.

Hereditary Factors

Gum disease can run in families or give you a predisposition. However, you can still mitigate your risks with diligent dental care and an excellent oral hygiene routine at home.

Specific Health Issues

Conditions like diabetes may increase your risk of developing gum disease. It's important to share your entire health history with the dentist, allowing us to be proactive.

This team deserves a 10/10.

Evaluating Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Healthy gums are light pink and hug the teeth tightly. Swelling, bleeding, and pain all indicate the presence of gum disease. We take measurements of the pockets between the teeth and gums and check bone health with x-rays during the periodontal evaluation.

Gingivitis – early gum disease, which is reversible
Periodontitis – advanced gum disease, which we manage with specialized dental cleanings

Common periodontal disease symptoms include:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Inflammation and redness
  • Pain or sensitivity
  • Gum recession
  • Bad breath
  • Pus near the gumline
  • Mobile teeth
  • Bone loss

We will discuss any signs of gum disease with you and devise a hygiene program that will help you regain good oral health, fresh breath, and a comfortable smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Pritpal Gill started Oak Tree Dentistry with our Elk Grove location and added our Lodi location to serve another community in need of high-quality, gentle dentistry for patients of all ages.

Because of our location, we are honored to serve many senior and elderly patients. We believe having good oral health care as you age is part of vitality and longevity. It is an important aspect of overall wellness for the wisest members of our community. We offer everything from gum treatments to dental implants and everything in between.

Dental care is important for every stage of life because having healthy teeth and gums means that you face fewer dietary restrictions due to pain or tooth loss. Being able to eat crunchy vegetables, healthy proteins, and heart-healthy grains with friends and family supports not only good health, but also good times.

If you require dentures, we offer everything from complete dentures to partial dentures and even implant-supported dentures for additional stability when you laugh and eat.

Our Lodi dental office is located near the intersection of S Sacramento Rd and W Lodi Ave near Woodbridge Ecological Reserve and Micke Road Zoo. We welcome patients from Lodi, Woodbridge, Armstrong, and nearby communities.

We look forward to meeting you and your family and welcoming you to your new dental home.

Because gum disease starts as gingivitis—a lesser disease—you may have few symptoms early on. But as time goes by, you may notice:

  • Gum pocketing and recession
  • Loose and mobile teeth
  • Bleeding gums when brushing
  • Gum inflammation and pain
  • Recurring sour breath

Because the initial signs can be subtle, you must visit your dentist regularly for an early diagnosis. If your Lodi dentist catches gum disease in the gingivitis stage, we can typically eradicate it and restore you to full oral health. Unfortunately, advanced gum disease is treatable but not so curable.

Gum Disease Treatment in Lodi, CA

Gum disease treatment may include deep cleanings below the gumline to rid periodontal pockets of bacteria and encourage the tissue to reattach to the tooth roots. While this is not a cure, it lowers your risks for tooth loss and gum disease complications that can affect systemic health.

Other treatments may include at-home rinses and added oral hygiene sessions.

Your dentist will discuss the options and devise a plan to address your needs.

At Oak Tree Dentistry, your smile is our passion, and so is your comfort!

We’re pleased to offer three levels of dental sedation in Lodi and Elk Grove to meet your needs.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

Our team monitors you closely during dental sedation, and we take a health history to ensure your candidacy.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe gas administered through a nasal cannula during your procedure. You feel detached and melancholy with nitrous, but you’re still aware. This sedation method means you’ll feel less anxious during your procedure, but there are no lingering effects. You can drive yourself home or back to work.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a pill given before treatment. With this sedation method, you’ll feel completely relaxed and may not recall the finer details of your treatment. You’ll need a friend or loved one to drive you. We also recommend resting for the day and not making any life-altering decisions.

IV Sedation

As with oral sedation, you should have transportation and rest for the remainder of the day following your procedure. IV sedation is delivered directly into the bloodstream. You’ll be minimally conscious but mostly unaware of what’s happening. It’s doubtful you’ll remember your procedure.

Comfortable Dental Cleanings

We see our patients as individuals with unique needs. Dr. Gill will sit down with you and discuss your options to regain your oral health. He also enjoys sharing knowledge and will review ways to improve your gum health at home.

Periodontal disease is best treated when the dentist and patient work together.

Often, we can improve gum health with a series of dental cleanings designed to eliminate tartar and bacteria from beneath the gumline. To ensure comfort, Dr. Gill can numb the area or offer nitrous oxide to reduce anxiety. When combined with improved home care, you will feel healthier and happier!

Patients at Greater Risk for Gum Disease

While gum disease most often develops out of neglect or improper brushing and flossing habits, some conditions can lead to a higher risk of infection.

Pregnancy or hormone changes – Expecting mothers and women going through menopause have hormone fluctuations that can contribute to gum disease. Rather than avoiding the dentist, more frequent dental cleanings can protect your health and that of your child.

Medications and medical treatment – Certain medications and cancer treatments cause dry mouth, which makes gum disease more likely to develop. Specially designed products and additional dental prevention can protect your health when you need it most.

Reduced dexterity – Patients with painful hands or joints may find it difficult to brush and floss effectively. Electric toothbrushes and gentle dental cleanings here in our Elk Grove dental office will help you maintain a healthy smile.

Bleeding Gums? Give Us a Call!

We will never judge you for missing too many dental cleanings. Elk Grove dentist Dr. Pritpal Gill is kind and compassionate, helping many of our patients regain their oral health and confidence in their smiles.
