Sedation Dentistry

Do you fear dental visits? Dental anxiety is common and affects millions, but sedation dentistry offers patients a way to comfortably get the dental care they need.

Many people feel nervous sitting in the dental chair, while others are anxious enough to avoid scheduling appointments. Then there are those with a full-blown dental phobia that leaves them so panic-stricken they only see the dentist when severe pain forces them to.

Whatever level of anxiety you experience, we'll tailor sedation dentistry at our Elk Grove and Lodi dental offices to fit your needs. With nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, our dentists safely provide the level of relaxation and comfort necessary to relieve your dental anxiety.

Sedation Dentistry Options to Meet Your Needs

Your dentist can help you choose the potency and type of dental sedation you need to achieve complete relaxation during your dental appointment. Below are a few key reasons to choose dental sedation in Lodi or Elk Grove!

Time Goes Faster

Dental sedation makes your time in the dental chair go by much faster. You'll feel the treatment has only started, but it's already done!

You'll Feel Less Anxious

Fear and dental anxiety can keep you from getting the treatment you need. Sedation dentistry may be the solution.

A Muted Gag Reflex

If you gag easily, you're not alone. Fortunately, the right level of sedation can relax your gag reflex, making your appointment comfortable.

Our sedation dentist in Lodi or Elk Grove will evaluate you to ensure sedation dentistry is safe. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is usually suitable for patients of all ages.

Relaxing Dental Care: Sedation Dentistry Options

Nitrous Oxide: We administer this safe gas through a nasal mask. You’ll feel relaxed and detached from the dental work, but these effects don’t linger. After your treatment, you can still drive yourself home or return to work.

Oral Conscious Sedation: This sedation option is a mild sedative that allows you to get the care you need without anxiety. You can’t drive or operate machinery on the day of treatment after taking this medication.

IV Dental Sedation: With this method, you may not remember your treatment, but you’ll still respond to the dentist’s instructions while sedated. As with oral conscious sedation, you can’t operate machinery or drive on the day of treatment after the IV.

Nitrous oxide is typically safe for patients of all ages, including seniors and children.

Nitrous oxide is a relaxant delivered through a small nose mask. You feel tranquil and removed from your dental treatment when you wear the mask. You understand that you’re having a procedure or similar, but you don’t care very much.

After treatment, we remove the mask, and you can drive yourself home. You can return to work or enjoy your day without lingering side effects.

Your dentist in Lodi and Elk Grove offers the following sedation dentistry options:

  • Nitrous oxide
  • Oral conscious sedation
  • IV sedation

For the latter two options, we take a health history and ask about your current medications. Oral and IV sedation means you can’t drive or operate machinery after treatment. You also shouldn’t make any important decisions until the next day.

Reasons to Consider Sedation Dentistry in Elk Grove and Lodi

If you’re having an invasive procedure and are feeling on edge, sedation may be the solution. It’s also good for dental anxiety and phobia.

Sedation may be a good idea for patients with a powerful gag reflex or those undergoing lengthy treatments.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

Our team monitors you closely during dental sedation, and we take a health history to ensure your candidacy.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe gas administered through a nasal cannula during your procedure. You feel detached and melancholy with nitrous, but you’re still aware. This sedation method means you’ll feel less anxious during your procedure, but there are no lingering effects. You can drive yourself home or back to work.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a pill given before treatment. With this sedation method, you’ll feel completely relaxed and may not recall the finer details of your treatment. You’ll need a friend or loved one to drive you. We also recommend resting for the day and not making any life-altering decisions.

IV Sedation

As with oral sedation, you should have transportation and rest for the remainder of the day following your procedure. IV sedation is delivered directly into the bloodstream. You’ll be minimally conscious but mostly unaware of what’s happening. It’s doubtful you’ll remember your procedure.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Everyone experiences dentistry differently, so we take time to get to know our patients and understand what they need to have a comfortable experience. Even if you don't have dental anxiety, you may desire a more relaxed experience, and sedation dentistry can benefit you, too!

Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

Some patients want to take the edge off their anxiety but don't want to go to sleep or spend hours feeling groggy after their appointment. For them, nitrous oxide, also called "laughing gas," is the perfect solution.

Nitrous oxide sedation offers mild relaxation that induces a dreamy state without putting you to sleep. We administer nitrous through a small breathing mask, and you just sit back and breathe normally.

You will be conscious but feel a warm sense of calm and well-being, and the activity around you won't affect you. After your appointment, you can resume your activities with no drowsy after-effects.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Our sedation dentists can also prescribe a mild sedative to take before you get to our office to experience deeper relaxation. You will feel relaxed when you arrive, and we can get you started on nitrous oxide for a completely comfortable, stress-free experience.

If you opt for oral sedation, we require you to have someone drive you to and from your appointment safely.

IV Sedation Dentistry

If you have a more complex or longer procedure planned or want to go to sleep, we recommend IV (intravenous) sedation. With IV sedation, the calming medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream for immediate effects.

You will be semi-conscious so our dental team can continue communicating with you. However, you will be unaware of the activity around you and will not remember the procedure or much of what happens. Our highly trained dental professionals will monitor you throughout your appointment to ensure your safety and comfort.

IV sedation will leave you groggy and sleepy for several hours, so you will need someone to drive you home safely. It would be best if you planned to take the rest of the day to relax at home as the effects of IV sedation wear off.
