When a Toothache Is an Emergency

Anytime your tooth hurts, or you have inflammation near your tooth, gums, or jaw, it’s time to seek the help of your Elk Grove dentist, Dr. Gill.

Pain is your body’s way of letting you know that a serious condition has developed. Give us a call right away, even if you are not sure you need a dental emergency visit.

We are here to help.

Lowering Your Dental Emergency Risks

Most dental emergencies result from tooth infections in the root canal. These infections can be excruciating and cause swelling in the face and on the gum. Let's look at ways to reduce root infection risks and help prevent other dental emergencies.

See Your Dentist

Preventive dentistry means seeing your Lodi or Elk Grove dentist every six months for checkups and teeth cleanings. These visits significantly lower your risk of tooth decay and root infections.

Brush and Floss

Adopting and implementing an excellent oral care routine at home is crucial to your ongoing oral health. Brushing and flossing help mitigate the odds of a dental emergency and other issues.

Protect Your Smile

Always wear a mouthguard when playing sports. If you grind and clench your teeth, talk to your dentist about a nightguard to prevent tooth damage and other oral health complications.

He was very professional

I got my wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Gill. He was very professional, and the whole procedure was painless. He even called the next day to check on me.

Your Emergency Dental Visit

Whether you are new to our office or a valued regular patient, we are here to put you at ease. Our team will update your medical history and take an x-ray of the painful area to assist Dr. Gill with diagnosing your condition, and you will receive reassurance every step of the way. We know that dental pain causes stress.

Dr. Gill will focus on your problem and eliminate your pain with prompt treatment. Whether you need a filling, crown, root canal, or extraction, you will leave feeling much better!

Root Canal Therapy

One of the most common dental emergencies we treat is an infection inside the tooth, often requiring root canal therapy. Root canal treatment is not painful but actually relieves the pain caused by the infection.

Using 3-D imaging, Dr. Gill can easily see the extent of the infection and how to treat it. After numbing the tooth with a local anesthetic, Dr. Gill will remove the bacteria, infection, nerve, and pulp from the tooth. We use high-tech rotary instruments for improved accuracy and ideal outcomes. Rotary instruments have tiny titanium tips that gently treat the inside of the canal much faster than could be accomplished with older methods.

Dr. Gill will then sterilize the inside of the tooth and fill it to close the canal. Finally, he will temporarily fill the tooth until your body completes the healing process.

In most cases, we recommend a dental crown to protect your root canal-treated tooth from fracturing.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your mouth and teeth are generally healthy, teeth whitening will likely be completely safe for you. Professional teeth whitening is an affordable and simple way to spruce up your smile and eliminate the stains that have collected for years.

We will evaluate your gums and look for any signs of recession that might make your teeth sensitive during whitening. Recession does not mean that you cannot whiten your teeth, just that we may recommend desensitizers or a fluoride application to protect exposed roots.

Zoom! whitening is done using 10% carbamide peroxide, and studies showed no effect on the mineral content of teeth. Professionally done teeth whitening does not cause any permanent damage to your teeth.

Over-the-counter whitening products can actually damage teeth because they often contain abrasive materials that scratch away at enamel with permanent repercussions. They also provide unpredictable results that look uneven or blotchy.

Our custom teeth whitening system will give you brilliant results in just a couple of weeks. For faster results, we offer in-office teeth whitening to jump-start the process.

To learn more about teeth whitening options in Elk Grove, CA, give us a call! We are here to help you find the teeth whitening options that give you a bright, stunning smile for any special occasion.

A dental emergency is any change to your oral health that causes pain, discomfort, or risks your smile.

Your emergency dentist in Lodi or Elk Grove, CA, sets aside time in the daily schedule to accommodate dental emergencies and will always take measures to see you as soon as possible.

If you’re unsure whether your oral health issue is a dental emergency, we urge you to contact a dental team member for guidance.

Common Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency can mean many things, including but not limited to:

  • Toothache or increasing tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw or face swelling
  • A broken or knocked-out tooth
  • A fractured or knocked-out restoration
  • Injury to the gums or oral tissues

If you have a small chip or crack that is not painful, it can often wait until the next available appointment. However, if you have a traumatic injury that is not limited to the mouth—for example, a trauma—you should go directly to the hospital and contact us after you’ve been treated and cleared by an ER doctor.

Is It Time for Your Next Checkup and Teeth Cleaning

Keeping current on checkups and teeth cleanings lowers your risk of dental emergencies. These healthy habits also help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

To schedule your next appointment, contact us today.

Root canal treatment in Lodi or Elk Grove, CA, is a treatment we use to ease pain and swelling by removing infection from your tooth.

A tooth root infection can be excruciating, cause face swelling, and put adjacent teeth at risk for loss. Fortunately, gentle root canal therapy can prevent these complications.

Root Infection Causes and Prevention

When bacteria penetrate your tooth to the canal, you are at risk for infection. Bacteria can penetrate the tooth if you have untreated decay, untreated damage, poor oral hygiene, or insufficient dental care.

To help lower your infection risks, you should visit the dentist every six months for checkups and teeth cleanings. It’s also essential to implement an excellent oral care routine at home. If you injure your tooth or notice oral health changes like tooth sensitivity, we recommend contacting our dental office for an assessment.

Remember, root canal therapy is not painful—it is pain-relieving! It can also save your teeth and oral health.

We’re pleased to offer three levels of dental sedation in Lodi and Elk Grove to meet your needs.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

Our team monitors you closely during dental sedation, and we take a health history to ensure your candidacy.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe gas administered through a nasal cannula during your procedure. You feel detached and melancholy with nitrous, but you’re still aware. This sedation method means you’ll feel less anxious during your procedure, but there are no lingering effects. You can drive yourself home or back to work.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a pill given before treatment. With this sedation method, you’ll feel completely relaxed and may not recall the finer details of your treatment. You’ll need a friend or loved one to drive you. We also recommend resting for the day and not making any life-altering decisions.

IV Sedation

As with oral sedation, you should have transportation and rest for the remainder of the day following your procedure. IV sedation is delivered directly into the bloodstream. You’ll be minimally conscious but mostly unaware of what’s happening. It’s doubtful you’ll remember your procedure.
