Children's Dentistry

Our mission is to help families in Elk Grove, Sacramento, Galt, Roseville, and Lodi achieve excellent oral health. Studies show that when children have good dental care during youth that their mouths are healthier as adults. That is why we make children our special guests at Oak Tree Dentistry.

Nothing brightens our day more than when children visit our dental office. Dr. Pritpal Gill engages children’s curiosity and puts them at ease during every dental appointment.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages children receive their first dental check-up by the time their first tooth makes an appearance, or by their first birthday.

We welcome children for this early childhood visit, where we will spend time with parents discussing their children’s development, demonstrating how to best care for little smiles at home, and answering any questions they may have.

We provide pediatric dentistry, which includes nutritional counseling, behavior modification (thumb-sucking and bottle use), and hygiene instruction.

A ride in the chair and a meet and greet with our team will help your little one develop a positive attitude about dentistry that lasts a lifetime.

Benefits of Early Dental Care

Your child should see the dentist around their first birthday or when you notice a tooth erupting from the gum. There are many valuable benefits to early dental care, and we've highlighted a few of these below.

Baby Teeth Play a Vital Role in Development

Baby teeth help your child learn to speak and chew, and they act as placeholders for adult teeth. Keeping them healthy from the start plays an important role in development.

Monitoring Development Is Crucial

Seeing the dentist from an early age allows us to monitor your child's oral development, including jaw joint health, tooth eruption, and general oral progress as they age.

A Trusting Relationship with the Team

It's important to acclimate your child to the dental setting early. This reduces the risk of dental anxiety and helps them build a trusting relationship with our team.

The quality of work performed was excellent

Not only is Dr Gill a great dentist, he was great to work with! The quality of work performed was excellent right along with the quality of care in his patients and staff. With experience he is a very trustworthy doctor, from kids to elders.

Gentle Dentistry for Kids

If your child requires dental care, such as a filling, Dr. Gill will always ensure that the child feels at ease and comfortable with the procedure.

By speaking to children in the language they understand and fostering their natural sense of curiosity, dentistry becomes an adventure rather than something they fear.

Parents are welcome to either participate in appointments or to sit back in our comfortable welcome area, enjoying treats from our comfort menu, while we look after their kids.

Preventive Dentistry for Kids

Cavities are the most common preventable childhood disease. You might think that cavity prevention in baby (primary) teeth is not important since they fall out anyway, but primary teeth actually provide the blueprint for adult teeth to emerge correctly.

We offer preventive dentistry to keep your child’s primary and permanent teeth healthy and comfortable.

  • Dental exams
  • Children’s cleanings
  • Fluoride treatment
  • Sealants
  • Athletic mouthguards
  • Space maintainers

Every child is different, and Dr. Gill will discuss his findings with you so that you can make the best choices for your child’s oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child in for their first visit when their first tooth erupts, usually close to or shortly after their first birthday.

The dentist will monitor their oral development to ensure teeth are coming in correctly and that there are no underlying issues. We also take measures to acclimate them to the dental environment, showing them that the dentist’s office can be fun!

We introduce treatments on an age-appropriate timeline and always share findings with you. We can also offer nutritional advice and guidance for thumb-sucking and pacifier use.

When it comes to your child’s dental health, it’s a collaborative effort. We want to give you the tools to oversee their at-home care, and we’ll handle the rest!

We have found that children enjoy visiting our team, and we love catching up with them during their dental checkups.

For your part, we recommend using safe language about the dental office. Avoid words like "needle" and "drill."

Our dental team cares for patients of all ages, and we can’t wait to meet your little one.

We welcome your call to schedule your child’s first visit with the dentist or if you have questions.

Children are sometimes easily distracted. They want to move away from the chore or task at hand and return to playing or watching a favorite program.

We know it can be challenging to encourage kids to brush with purpose. So, we have included a few tips below that might help.

Tips to Encourage Your Child to Brush Efficiently

#1 Toothbrush Choice — Your child may show more interest in brushing if they can choose a favorite toothbrush character or even a toothbrush that plays a song.

#2 The Tooth Fairy — If your child believes in the tooth fairy, remind them that the fairy pays more for cavity-free teeth.

#3 A Game—You can make their oral hygiene session a game by encouraging them to brush through a favorite song. The song should be two minutes or longer.

#4 A Reward—You can reward your child for a job well done, either with a financial incentive or the choice of a favorite toy, when they receive a clean bill of dental health from their Lodi or Elk Grove dentist.

#5 A Chat — Our team is excellent with children and can talk to them about the importance of brushing. We can also demonstrate how to help them along.

At Oak Tree Dentistry, your smile is our passion, and so is your comfort!

We’re pleased to offer three levels of dental sedation in Lodi and Elk Grove to meet your needs.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

Our team monitors you closely during dental sedation, and we take a health history to ensure your candidacy.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe gas administered through a nasal cannula during your procedure. You feel detached and melancholy with nitrous, but you’re still aware. This sedation method means you’ll feel less anxious during your procedure, but there are no lingering effects. You can drive yourself home or back to work.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a pill given before treatment. With this sedation method, you’ll feel completely relaxed and may not recall the finer details of your treatment. You’ll need a friend or loved one to drive you. We also recommend resting for the day and not making any life-altering decisions.

IV Sedation

As with oral sedation, you should have transportation and rest for the remainder of the day following your procedure. IV sedation is delivered directly into the bloodstream. You’ll be minimally conscious but mostly unaware of what’s happening. It’s doubtful you’ll remember your procedure.
